Cycle Fever at Mares in the Vattenfall Cyclassics in Hamburg
On Sunday, Mares Shipping competed in the Vattenfall Cyclassics, Europe’s largest cycle race, for the 11th time. Our team of 23 employees and friends completed the circuit in wonderful weather. Hundreds of thousands of spectators cheered the 15,000 amateur and professional cyclists along the route, which was closed to public traffic and led as usual through the most beautiful parts of Hamburg and the surrounding area. And there were also a number of new features to mark the 20th anniversary of Cyclassics. Under the motto “cooperation instead of competition”, 1,000 participants had the opportunity to cover the 55km route without any timekeeping. A colourful and informative exhibition and supporting programme provided additional entertainment at Jungfernstieg and Rathausmarkt.
Our cyclists had been preparing for the Vattenfall Cyclassics for months, meeting early in the morning at weekends to train for the 55km and 100km race. During the week, many had abandoned their comfortable train journey and cycled to work in the wind and rain. Of course, they also had plenty of fun.
And the training paid off: all our cyclists completed the race without any injuries, achieving record times. Our fastest male covered the 100km route in just 02:50:43 hours, with an average speed of 37.26 km/h. One of our ladies finished in 55th place among the 100km cyclists, in 02:45:12 hours. Other employees were also able to celebrate these great performances. Our team thoroughly deserved the post-race BBQ in our inner courtyard, which was warmly received. Our Personal Health Coach, Sascha Bade, attended to the wellbeing of our cyclists and massaged their aching muscles.
We once again had a great time and lots of fun. The Mares cycling team has become even closer in recent weeks and we’re already looking forward to continuing our sporting summer at our next race, MOPO Team-Staffellauf.
